Creating Digital Materials and Design Thinking in Inclusive Classroom

Course Summary

The increased availability of digital technology and mobile devices allows teachers and teaching staff to create digital materials and redesign them.

This course will help you to get started in creating digital materials, moving from the initial idea through to the creation and publishing of the final content. At the same time, you will learn how to redesign materials and digital content, adapting them to your needs and respecting the basis of design thinking.

The course will give hands-on experience with content creation tools and approaches and is intended for anyone wanting to create their own digital resources.

Concurrently, it is important to think ahead about redesign possibilities, depending on the needs. Technology allows revising and redesigning learning activities, by needs and educational circumstances.

Course Detailed Description

In the past decade, the use of technology in the education sector has tripled. Teachers use digital classroom technology to streamline the learning and assessment process. They should know which digital tools to use to create a compelling and challenging digital leadership environment where students can learn and develop. Therefore, is very important to be able to create digital materials and redesign existing ones.

For that, the teachers have to have highly developed digital literacy competence as well as digital competence for learning (skills, knowledge and attitudes needed for learning with digital devices) which is a factor that affects the effectiveness of both the traditional and e-learning process.

Knowing appropriate and effective, but stable digital tools and their terms of use is one of the priorities.

Curating digital materials so as to ensure their continued access has emerged as a major initiative for information organizations. Providing long-term access to digital materials has several challenges. Digital materials require constant and perpetual maintenance. Technologies change, equipment ages and software is superseded. Digital materials are not fixed and can easily be changed, intentionally or unintentionally. Teachers have to be ready to respond to these challenges. That’s why teachers should follow digital trends and be at the centre of the digital ecosystem.

Opportunities for digital technology in design thinking and innovation in education are very powerful and digital design thinking can help avoid mistakes by applying available tools and shifting the focus to students. This means designing and creating digital materials for students.

The main goal of this course is to learn how to create/design and redesign learning material following the latest knowledge in the field of educational digital design.

Other course goals are to:

  • find out how to quickly and reliably choose adequate digital learning resources and/or material

  • increase existing digital literacy competence

  • be able to choose the most suitable digital tools for creating digital content according to a student's needs and learning styles

  • get to know and be in touch with design thinking pillars: students, school and technology

  • learn how to redesign the existing digital materials

  • prepare Micro-lesson or Learning scenario using at least three different digital tools

  • do self-assessment

Topics:

create, design thinking, digital materials, digital tools, ICT, literacy skills, teaching
